Growing Childhood Memories: The things that matter most! Family Garden Life.

It was raining the other day, as it had been for days prior to that, so I was desperate to get outside in the garden and potter around. To be perfectly honest, I love gardening in the rain, because the weeds are easier to pull out, and the sound of the rain around me just makes me feel so alive. It was what happened next that made me realise what type of memories we were making at that very moment.

As I walked down the stairs, right behind me was my 7 year old daughter, equip with her bright yellow raincoat, shoes and gardening gloves. She turned to me and said:
“Ok mum, what’s on the list today?”

You could have seen my smile from across the other side of the world. You see, at that very moment I realised just how much my actions played out in their lives. I was very humbled to have her follow in my steps.

Enjoying the garden with all our family is something my husband and I have always tried to achieve. There are so many things you can do together that can enrich your quality of life, and strengthen your family bond. Together we sow seeds, grow our own produce, cook in a garden kitchen, and create fun and engaging activities for the kids to enjoy and explore outside.

It’s the hands on learning that has taught our kids to appreciate flowers, and the importance of bees, beneficial insects, composting and so much more. I’m not saying that they don’t have screen time, because let’s face it, that would be almost impossible and unrealistic in today’s world, but they are able to balance their activities, enjoy getting their hands in the dirt and be out in the sunshine (or rain).

In February 2017, I launched Family Garden Life which is a platform for mums to explore opportunities to do the same. It is a place to grow knowledge, share triumphs and access resources all in the one location. It doesn’t matter if you have green thumbs or black thumbs, it’s what matters next, that can change your life for the better.

Together we are teaching our kids the fundamental skills of life, from seed to plant to produce. It doesn’t get much better than that! Here is a taste of some of the cool things we do:

Learning how to separate seedlings:

Designing and exploring ideas for fairy gardening:

Learning about herbs and how they are used in cooking:

Tending to our veggies (with our HOSELINK):

Seed raising and talking about the life cycle:

Harvest collecting and using in our garden kitchen:

Exploring and learning the names of plants:

Discovering flowers:
