1. Gazania Rigens Yellow

Appearance: Beautiful yellow daisy-like flowers with a brownish black water mark on each petal creating a perfect circle around the centre of the flower. The Gazania Rigens are 15-25cm in height and about 1 meter in width. 

Cultivation: Plant in well-drained soil in a full sun position for best results. This flower requires mulch and regular water until it is established, which takes about 12 weeks. Once established the Gazania Rigens can be divided and planted in another area of the garden. This flower is hardy and drought tolerant once established. The Gazania Rigens is great for small hedges, pots, and border planting. 

Location: Gazania Rigens have naturalised on coastal dunes and roadsides in the Central Coast and Sydney regions of New South Wales as well as the coast of South East Queensland. In South Australia, it is found in the southern Mount Lofty area as well as on the Eyre Peninsula. Gazania Rigens grow in Subtropical areas including Southern states of North America, Northern Africa, South Africa, South Asia, and Australia. 

2. Gardenia Jasminoides 'Golden Magic'

Appearance: A glossy evergreen shrub with a vibrant and fragrant flower that turns a golden yellow as it ages, resembling a yellow rose.  It grows to be 1.5-2 meters tall and 1.5 meters wide with rich green coloured foliage. 

Cultivation: This plant needs a sunny position and in warmer parts of Australia it will need a more sheltered spot in the garden. Gardenia need to be sheltered from strong winds and exposed sites. For best results plant in free draining soil rich in organic matter. When potting this plant make sure to use a rich potting mix like peat moss or humus when initially planting and ensure the soil is medium to acidic for best results. Water the plant well and use mulch. Prune after flowering and fertilise in spring.  Gardenias flower in summer through to winter and make a great hedge or single specimen. 

Location: Gardenias  grow in the Subtropics, including Southern states of North America, Northern Africa, South Africa, South Asia, and Australia. 

 

3. Goodia lotifolia 'Yellow Bush Pea'

Appearance:  Little sunny yellow pea-shaped flowers with smooth rounded blue-green foliage. This plant grows up to 3 meters in height and 3 meters wide. 

Cultivation: This is a fast growing evergreen shrub that likes a full sun to lightly shaded location in free draining soil. Use a slow release native fertiliser and add some well-composted manure when planting for best results.  It requires regular watering until established which takes about 12 weeks.  After flowering, trim lightly for best growth results. This plant can tolerate drought and frost once established. To help it along give it a boost with liquid fertiliser following extremely dry to hot conditions. 

Location: Grows wild in most parts of Australia, predominantly coastal areas in NSW, QLD, and Victoria. 

 

4. Hibbertia Scandens

Appearance: Big bright yellow five petal flower with dark green decorative foliage. 

Cultivation: This plant can be found growing wild among sand dunes. They can be planted in a sandy soil in a position with direct sunlight to reach maximum flowering. This plant takes about 12 weeks to become established and requires regular watering and mulch until then. This plant is drought tolerant and can grow up to 1 meter in height and 3 meters wide. 

Location: Hibbertias can be found in Australia, New Guinea, New Caledonia, Fiji and Madagascar. 

 

5. Hibiscus 'Summer Love'

Appearance: Big tropical yellow beauty with a red centre and glossy foliage. Flowers in summer through to winter growing from 1-3 meters in height and 1-2 meters wide. 

Cultivation: Best positioned in the direct sunlight and in semi-sheltered areas in warmer parts of Australia. Plant in free draining soil that is rich in organic matter. Water regularly and mulch until the plant is established which takes about 12 weeks. This plant is resistant to most pests and disease, is easy-care, low maintenance and drought resistant. Can tolerate minor frosts and cool climates.

6. Anigozanthos 'Gold'

Appearance: A furry rich gold native Australian plant with superb strappy leaves. Also known as a Kangaroo paw which are evergreen natives that flower from spring to summer. Kangaroo paws can grow up to 1 metre in height and 1 meter wide. 

Cultivation: This plant prefers well-drained soil and drier conditions. Position in full sun or partial shade in warmer areas of Australia. Regularly prune old flowers and dead foliage for best results. Add organic matter to the soil to promote quicker and healthy growth. This is a sturdy plant that is drought resistant but has a slightly higher demand for water during spring and summer to ensure longevity of the blooms.

Location: Native to south-western Australia and can be found growing on the eastern coastal line.
